At the tender age of 11 I heard the words "Kayla has Lupus." For the next two years I took chemotherapy to repair kidney damage caused by Lupus Nephritis.
During that time so many people doubted what my future would hold. For me, though, there was no question I'd grow up to do everything I wanted to do. All these years later I still deal with the pain and fatigue that comes with Lupus. I still catch every little germ that floats around me. BUT in these 17 years I never let any of that stop me. I graduated college, got my MPA and then my JD. I passed the bar and became a licensed attorney. I became a member of the Lupus Foundation of NC's Governance Committee. And now, I'm clerking for the best judge on the NC Court of Appeals, Judge Reuben Young. I did all that while battling everything Lupus tossed my way. At the end of the day, Lupus and I are a team. Without her I wouldn't be the strong, determined woman I am today. I'll proudly carry her with me everywhere I go for the rest of my life, and she will never stop me from being all that I want to be.
I share my story to raise awareness and to spread encouragement. Lupus is invisible so without my story you'd never know what's going on beneath my sass and smile. To those who know exactly what I'm going through, I send love and hope that you can find a way to make your journey with Lupus a positive one.
I have Lupus, but Lupus doesn't have me.
Please join my team, donate, fundraise, and most importantly, spread awareness about Lupus.
