Welcome to Dr. Viv's Lupus Warriors page!
Thank y'all for coming to this page and considering joining the walk this year. To say "what a year" is a gross understatement, not just for me but for the world!
Most of y'all know my story but here's a quick rehash: diagnosed at 16 --> sick from meds, better with big diet changes (vegan then vegetarian) --> okay for a few years --> medical school = stress = flares --> residency = stress = flares --> married an amazing supporter and caregiver Sean --> pregnancy = lupus antibody, had to have my ,and baby's, heart checked every 2 weeks --> emergency C-section due to pre-eclampsia and liver failure at 28w6d --> very long postpartum recovery, continued high blood pressure --> established with terrific rheumatologist, started a new medicine in May (Benlysta, once weekly injection) --> not feeling well and siblings shipped me vegan ice cream (did I already say I have an amazing team of people supporting me? No? I do!) --> found out my kidneys are becoming more involved in July --> follow up in November 2021 and likely starting different medicine.
I've now spent over half my life living with lupus BUT it still hasn't beaten me. Pregnancy was terrifying, and my disease worsened because of it, but we have a beautiful little girl Devereaux, who will grow up knowing the importance of fighting for your health- physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.
The walk is virtual this year to help prevent the spread of all communicable diseases but especially COVID-19 and influenza- GET VACCINATED FOR BOTH. I'm vaccinated but, like lots of lupus patients, I am immunocompromised. Your vaccination helps protect people like me, and Devereaux who is still too young to get it herself (believe me she will get it as soon as possible!).
Consider a donation to help us meet our goal, or just join the team and walk with us on 10/16/21! Either way thank you for your support, prayers, encouragement, and love throughout my lupus journey.
