When I was diagnosed with Lupus it changed my life forever. I'm fortunate to have had amazing doctors, but at my time of diagnosis my kidneys were failing, my heart wasn't functioning correctly, I could barely move from the pain the Arthritis was causing all over my body, and my mind was unsteadied by the lack of options available to me at the time. There was not a single drug on the market that was approved to treat specifically Lupus nephritis, and I was destroying my body with steroids and chemotherapy based drugs. It didn't help that I'd never even heard of Lupus, and my journey to understanding what was happening to me was weighted even more by my struggle to learn and connect with others with the same condition.
Because of donations like yours, a drug called Benlysta was approved for my condition recently. These weekly infusions changed my life again, but this time for the better. I'm finally hopeful that one day in the near future I will be able to function normally again. But the fight isn't over.
People are fighting every day with Lupus and its accompanying conditions, without access to the same medications I have been lucky enough to get. And unfortunately, there are so many people who simply are not compatible with this single solution to existing with the disease. I hope we can slowly begin to build upon what we've already accomplished so that every individual who struggles from joint pain and hair loss, to total organ failure, can have hope for a better future.
Will you make a donation to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus? A generous contribution of absolutely anything can make a definite impact. What’s more, if your employer offers a Matching Gift Program to employees, you may be able to double your contribution with just a little bit of paperwork. Trust me, it’s worth the effort! Every single dollar counts.
