2018 Walk To End Lupus Now: Council Bluffs

The Sammies

Welcome to our fundraising team page.

Had you ever heard of Lupus before this message? My answer to that question before the summer of 2016 would have been, no. Unfortunately, my ignorant bliss was not to last. In August of 2016 my older sister Samantha went into a doctor’s appointment assuming she was going to get treatment for a kidney infection. The doctors discovery was not a kidney infection, but that there was something else causing Samantha to be very sick.  Her doctor quickly hospitalized Samantha… and several days later, diagnosed her with Lupus of the Kidneys.  That week is one I would rather forget, but the memories of the emotions and pain I felt for my sister are still very vivid. I remember being scared for her and her daughter Isabella. I remember imagining the worst possible scenarios, but hoping for the best.  I remember requesting prayers for Samantha and Isabella from anyone who offered help or support.

I am thrilled to say that those prayers along with the work of an amazing group of doctors helped Samantha tremendously! Today, Samantha is living her life almost as normally as she did before that August day in 2016. Yes, I am so thankful that Samantha is living a great life, but there is still progress to be made to fight her lupus. One of my biggest and most persistent prayers is that there will be a day when Samantha does not have to worry about prescriptions or extra doctors’ appointments, and that she won't have to ever think about Lupus again!

Imagine a day when doctors can say, "There is a cure for lupus". Until that day though, there is work to be done. That's why we are taking action in the fight against lupus. Join us as we participate in the Lupus Foundation of America's Walk to End Lupus Now! in [city] to raise critical funds for the estimated 1.5 million people living with lupus in the United States.

Will you join our team and help us reach our fundraising goal? You’ll be supporting the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus. You can also support by making a secure contribution on our walk page. Every single dollar counts!

Did you know?

  • Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure.
  • Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
  • While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
  • Only one drug has ever been developed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat the disease.

Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Join our team today and support our efforts!
