Walk to End Lupus Now, St Louis 2019

Allison's Army

Welcome to Allison's Army fundraising team page.

A Message from Allison-

You may have noticed I celebrated my 30th birthday in the hospital back in November, where I spent a little over a week searching for answers. A few weeks prior I went from not feeling very well to extremely lethargic and unable to get out of bed. I knew something was not right.

Prayers were requested for me without any real explanation, to be honest I was still trying to wrap my head around what was going on and what my new reality was.

Right before Thanksgiving, I was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis, a kind of Lupus that attacks the kidneys.

What is Lupus? Lupus is an autoimmune disease, with lupus, the bodys immune system
targets its own body tissues. *It is not contagious

As November feels like a long time, it is still the beginning stages of mastering medications to get blood clots out of my kidneys and controlling the kidney disease.

As you can imagine, this came as a shock, I am still learning and processing. I went from a healthy and active thirty-year-old to ending up in the hospital. There has been a whirlwind of emotions, acceptance, faith and support from loved ones of what felt like an overwhelming new life that happened overnight.

The most overwhelming feeling was not knowing anything about Lupus. No one talks about Lupus, and therefore most people are uneducated and look to the internet full of scary facts that can lead you down a rabbit hole pretty quickly.

Every case is different and every day is different. Someone with lupus may seem and look healthy on the outside, but it is a disease that attacks ones self, so looking and feeling healthy may not always be the case. For now, while I am out and about during flu season, I will be rocking my newest accessory of face masks to keep me protected.

I am thankful for all the love and support and ask for continued prayers. Although this is treatable and manageable, there will be good days and there will be bad days, and I look forward to the great days because I know they lie ahead. I will be back to the same goofy, fun spirited Allison….it is a promise!

Lupus does not define me, but it is a part of my story – a part of my story I choose to share in hopes of educating others and bringing awareness to this disease nobody talks about. My biggest message to you is to please listen to your body.

Thanks for all your LOVE and SUPPORT

Allison

Did you know?

  • Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure.
  • Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
  • While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
  • Only one drug has ever been developed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat the disease.

Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Join our team today and support our efforts!
