Most everyone has heard of Lupus, but many do not know much about it. Lupus is an unpredictable and misunderstood disease in which the immune system is out of balance, causing damage to any organ system in the body. This disease has no distinction among genger, age, or ethnicity. One day life is rolling along and suddenly, with no warning, you feel as though you have literallly run into a brick wall.
Symptoms of lupus come and go, change over time and can imitate other illnesses, making lupus difficult to diagnose. Common symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, overwhelming fatigue, and fevers that last for days or weeks. The exact cause of lupus is unknown.
While lupus can be disabling and fatal, the disease can be managed in most cases through aggressive medical treatment and lifestyle changes. The Lupus Foundation of America, Heartland Chapter understands the uncertainty of living with lupus. The LFA is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people affected by lupus. Our chapter programs include: monthly support groups, educational programs, lupus information and literature, summer youth retreat, and patient assistance and resources. Nationally, the Foundation continues to advocate for and contribute to investment into research to advance the science and medicine of lupus.
