2018 Walk to End Lupus Now, Atlanta

Pat's Purple Boot Challenge

At last year's Georgia Lupus Summit, I had the pleasure of listening to a presentation made by Dr. Gary Gilkerson, a nationally-renowned physician and lupus researcher. It was an excellent presentation.

In his presentation, Dr. Gilkerson discussed a challenge he gave to his staff to raise money for lupus research. If a stated goal was met, Dr. Gilkerson agreed to publicly wear a pair of flamboyant purple boots. The goal was met.

In reflecting on how to set up my 2018 Walk Page, I came to the conclusion that if a nationally- renowned physician and researcher could create an embarrassing challenge, I could stand it, as well.

Those of you who know me well know I do not like making a spectacle of myself. Nevertheless, I will do it to raise funds for the Georgia Chapter.

Above you will see a picture of a pair of boots I have purchased for the 2018 Walk. There is no doubt I will look ridiculous in them.

Here is my challenge:

  • If my Walk Page raises $5000 before the April 21, 2018, Walk, I will wear these boots on stage when I deliver my greeting to thousands of walkers who have assembled. I will be wearing shorts to allow for a full view of the boots.
  • If my Walk Page raises $7500 before April 21, 2018, I wear these boots and will walk the perimeter of Georgia State Stadium (formerly Turner Field). In addition, my daughter, Sarah, has agreed to choreograph what I am sure will be an incredibly embarrassing dance for me to perform on the Main Stage.

I will make sure those of you who cannot attend the Walk will get your fill of embarrassing photos.

Do not let this one-time opportunity to embarrass me pass you by. Please donate any amount you can to my 2018 Walk Page for lupus.

Thanking you in advance, I remain

Sincerely yours,

- Pat

Did you know?

  • Lupus is a mysterious and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It strikes without warning, affects each person differently, and has no known causes or cure.
  • Lupus symptoms can be severe and highly unpredictable and can damage any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys.
  • While lupus can strike anyone at any time, 90% of people living with lupus are women. Women of color are at especially high risk.
  • Only one drug has ever been developed and approved by the US Food and Drug Administration specifically to treat the disease.

Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Join our team today and support our efforts!
