I’m Walking to End Lupus. Won't You Please Join Me?
I can't wait for a day when doctors can say, “There is a cure for lupus!” Until that day though, there is oh so much work to be done. That’s why I’m taking action in the fight against lupus. Please join me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now™ in Georgia State Stadium to raise critical funds for the estimated 1.5 million people living with lupus in the United States.
Hi everyone! I'm Janet and I hope you will do me the favor of reading this. I am a wife and mother. I am a past engineer, a current teacher, a husky mom : ) and, hopefully, a future lupus-free grandma.
Lupus is an autoimmune disease affecting more than 1.5 million Americans, 60,000 of whom are Georgians. It is a chronic, debilitating, destructive, and, at times, fatal disease that strikes without warning, ravaging almost any part of the body. Lupus is complex and difficult to diagnose, hard to live with, and a challenge to treat. There is no known cause and no known cure, yet lupus research is woefully underfunded.
In the past I have always asked you to join me in finding a cure for my fellow lupus warriors and me. But this year, I have a different request. I am no longer asking for a cure for me; I am a wife, a mother, a teacher, and now, incredibly, a grandmother. I have lived a full life. Instead, I am asking, no, begging, you to join me in finding a cure for future generations.
Included on this page is a picture of one of my heartbeats, my incredible little warrior (she’s already survived heart surgery!), my granddaughter, Liliana. Also, on my mind, is my amazing daughter, Christie. Because both are female, they are at an increased risk of developing lupus. Because I already have lupus, that risk increases exponentially. And because of this, their dreams may not come true. As a mom and noni it devastates me to think lupus is the legacy I might leave to them.
As tired as I am of asking for your help, because of these two, I cannot stop asking. PLEASE join me in say, “ENOUGH!” Enough young women being stricken with this insidious disease in the prime of their lives. Enough toxic off-market treatments that do more harm than good as our only options for treatments. Enough lives lost to lupus.
PLEASE join me in helping to eradicate this horrible disease. A disease so stealth that it penetrated the safety of my womb and stole my son Brian from me some 19 years ago. A disease, that if left to its own devices, will continue to devastate families.
Please join me in this cause that is oh so dear to my heart. Please pray for a cure and, if you are able, donate what you can to support this battle. Any amount will be much appreciated for as they say, a journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step!
With love and hope,
