I was diagnosed with lupus at the age of 16, but lived with lupus many 8 years prior. It took so long to determine that I have lupus because lupus is rare in males. My journey began with chronic headaches and frequent muscle spasms. My symptoms progressed to frequent fevers, arthritis, and tremendous weight loss. I remember sitting in driver’s ed class barely able wrap my hands around the steering wheel and suffering from a constant cough. Walking up the stairwell to my bedroom each day felt like a heart attack. Eventually, I was diagnosd with lupus which means that my immune system can attack any part of my body. I have suffered from attacks to my heart, lungs, gi track, and centeral nervous system. I have lost 1/3 of my kidney function because of lupus and had to undergo chemotherapy for 9 months. In addition to lupus, i now live with Fibromyalgia, Sjogren’s Syndrome, Raynaund’s disease and Gout.
The only way to fight lupus is to suppress the immune system. The only drug developed specifically to treat lupus is Benlysta and that was approved by the FDA in 2012. Wiithout insurance, the cost of Benlysta is $11,000 per month. The other immunosuppressant drugs and antirejection drugs help, but they come with tremendous side effects. For example, I almost died of a blood infection, septic shock, in January of 2018 because I was on immunosuppressant medications. My blood pressure dropped to 59/30 and my kidneys began to fail. My body has never been the same. Since that event, I have not been the same and now take 13 prescriptions a day and Benlysta once a month. Three of my pills are immunosuppressants.
The Lupus Foundation of America, Georgia works throughout the year to make change! Be a part of that change by joining me as I participate in Lupus Foundation of America’s Walk to End Lupus Now™ in Atlanta, Georgia and Columbus, Georgia to raise critical funds for the estimated 1.5 million people living with lupus in the United States.
Will you make a tax-deductible donation to help me reach my personal fundraising goal and support the Foundation's efforts to improve the quality of life for all people affected by lupus?
Together, we can solve the cruel mystery of lupus. Thank you for your generosity!
