Does Physical Fitness Improve Quality of Life for Women with Lupus?

Scroll down for the answer.

Happy Lupus Awareness Month, Friends!

Our office is a flurry of activity in preparation for our 8th Annual A Tasteful Affair this Friday, May 17th, at the Ritz Charles. Our host this year is WTHR meteorologist Lindsey Monroe and our live auction will be led by auctioneer Isaac Stoller. This year ATA falls on the nationwide Put on Purple Day so we look forward to seeing lots of purple Friday night. And wear your dancing shoes because DJ Godzillest will be spinning tunes at the end of the evening! So bring your friends for a fun evening at the gala event of the year and support a great cause! The Ritz Charles has ample parking and tickets are on sale through event day.

In June, we hope you will join us for the Lupus Family Picnic and Walk Kick-off at Eagles Crest at Eagle Creek Park, catered by Payton's Barbeque.  And July heats up with the Faces of Lupus Fashion Show, a third-party event to benefit our Chapter. Come out and show your support to our beautiful lupus models.

For more information on how to celebrate Lupus Awareness Month, visit our National LFA Office website.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Sweeney Named 2018 Volunteer of the Year!

Bonnie Sweeney

Bonnie has been involved as a volunteer with our Chapter since reaching out to us in 2015. Her interest and commitment to supporting us has been grounded in the 30 years she shared the lupus journey with her sister, Nancy, who according to Bonnie, set the standard for living with lupus with grace, goals, achievement, love, compassion and a mantra: Celebrate the Day. This mantra can also be applied to Bonnie; from skiing, hiking, traveling and volunteering – Bonnie lives life to the fullest. She is selfless, sweet and dedicated, and we feel blessed for her support of our Chapter.  Read more and see past honorees

Support Group Information

We hope you'll join us at one of our upcoming support group meetings. We offer both in-person support group meetings and also a Teletalk support group. The philosophy of our support groups is to provide a warm and caring environment where people with lupus, their family members, caregivers and loved ones can share their experiences, methods of coping and insights into living with lupus.  LFA support groups help develop the best coping strategies to reduce a stress that often accompanies living with a chronic illness.

Our Chapter is attending all support group meetings to make bracelets for attendees. Here’s a picture of the bracelets made by the Indy East support group members and a schedule of the remaining support group meetings we’ll be attending:

AnswerAnswer:  A new study affirms an association between physical fitness – flexibility, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness – and improved quality of life for women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Researchers assessed 70 women with SLE and found those with high fitness level had better health outcomes. Maintaining muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness are important for women with SLE. More research is needed to understand the prognostic value of fitness and the extent to which increasing fitness through exercise might be linked to improvements in health-related quality of life.
