Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter

September 2022
Message From CEO Brian Rothenberger
Hello, friends.

I hope that you all had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. It was a blessing to have some down time to prepare for all the exciting things we’ve got coming up over the next two months!

Next week (Thursday, the 15th) we’ll be participating in the NCREI Public Health Summit on Lupus at Martin University. If you’d like to learn more about the event and how to join us (it’s free), please look for the registration link below.

We are also gearing up for our annual Walk to End Lupus Now! If you can join us in person, we’ll be at Military Park on Saturday, October 8th (more details below). For those who prefer to stay virtual again this year, please remember to register your team and let us know what you’re planning.

The #AmberStrong Lupus Benefit Ride is taking place in Sheridan on Saturday, September 17th, and the 'Toss for a Cause' Cornhole Tournament fundraiser is happening in Camby on Saturday, September 24th (details on both of these below). Hope you can come join the fun!

We are heavy into planning for the upcoming year and hope to be rolling out several new and revamped activities, programs, and services. Your support is critical to our ability to make this happen, and we thank you very much. If you need information, have questions, or would like to start your own fundraiser, please reach out to me at brian@lupusindiana.org or 317.225.4400 (and check out the resources in this newsletter).

I look forward to seeing many of you soon. Stay safe and be well.

Warm Regards,
-Brian

2022 Walk Facebook Cover
Get registered for the Walk to End Lupus Now being held on Sat, Oct 8th, at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis!

The initial t-shirt deadline is rapidly approaching! Only those registered walkers who raise or donate at least $50 by Thur, Sept 15th, will have their t-shirt available at the Walk so don't delay! T-shirts for people who register and fundraise/donate at least $50 after Thur, Sept 15th, and t-shirts for virtual walkers will be ordered separately and sent after the October 31st Walk fundraising deadline.

We're nearly halfway to our goal for this year and we need your help to get all the way there!

Of course, there are lots of great fundraising incentive prizes for you to earn, and again this year  we'll be having contests with Amazon gift card prizes for the top individual fundraiser, team captain of the top fundraising team, and team captain of the team with the most registered team members!

We still need volunteers! If you're interested in volunteering, please email chanel@lupusindiana.org or call the office at 317.225.4400.

Whether you choose to join us at Military Park or participate as a virtual walker in your neighborhood or community, your support is vital to the programs and services we provide to those affected by lupus in Indiana.

Let's Talk About It
Don't miss this month's 'Let's Talk About It' webinar being held on Wed, Sept 14th, from 7:00-8:00 pm EST. 'Let's Talk About It' is a series of live educational webinars designed to provide you with important information about living with lupus. Don't miss this opportunity to learn important information about living with lupus from the comfort of your home!

This month's  session is Inflammation and SLE Pathology of Diseases being led by Dr. Nelson Aluya. Inflammation is one of the body’s main defense mechanisms used to indicate that there is a problem that needs urgent solving. It is the body’s inherent protective reaction to injury, disease, or irritation of the tissues. Systematic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) called lupus for short is a clinical condition that can be managed well with the right treatments, that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease) often from a trigger that results in widespread whole body inflammation. Science is helping us understand better the pathology of the disease and how it affects the inflammatory changes in the body that may be related to diabetes, increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney disease.
